As far as we know there is no limit on the number of objects you can
have in TheSims or Livin' Large. Several people have posted they have
in excess of 1000 items with no problems other than it slows the load
time of the game way down, sometimes as long as 5 or 10 minutes.
First let us eliminate the obvious. Have you checked the right options
in the Buy or Build mode? Some objects show up in unexpected places
because they originate from something that you might not expect. A
statue created from one of the columns will show up in the Build mode
under Walls rather than the Buy mode under Art. Objects, no matter
what they appear as when they've been remade, will still be seen as the
original item by the game. I have a large plant that shows up under
the Table icon in Buy because it was made from altering a countertop
file. In fact I can put a lamp or computer in/on it. It looks strange
when one of the Sims sets down a plate full of food in the middle of
the plant. If you weren't aware of what the object has been you would
have no idea where to find it when you wanted to purchase it.
There two primary reasons objects fail to show up: A defective or
corrupt file is one. The other is conflicting ID numbers. If two or
more share ID numbers, one or all of them will not show up or has
pieces missing. My advice is to go to http://www.thesims.be.tf/ and
download the Object ID program and check what you have downloaded. You
also might want to get the Transmogrifer and see if all the objects
show up in it. Some defective objects might show up as a picture in
the Transmogrifer but it will fail to show the "Objects in Selected
File". If nothing shows up there, then delete the object because it is
missing crucial data. This seems to occur if the object creator has
left the Transmogrifer running when making zip files of objects. If
you have all your objects in a folder named Transmogrified, EliSims can
view them but I don't think it proves there are no problems with the
object.
You should put all your object downloads into a folder under the folder
named Downloads in the Maxis/The Sims directory unless otherwise
directed by the object designer. If you are going to use a lot of
objects in your game you are going to need to use tools like the Object
ID program and Transmogrifer to check them. If you don't do some
careful management you're going to end up with a lot of objects in your
game that are not working properly and could cause some serious
problems. Remember that objects that don't show up indicate bad files
or conflicting ID's. Either way, unless you can fix it, you need to
get those files out of your Sims folder.
